How do you get rid of nausea without taking medicine? There is nothing worse than feeling nauseated. In fact, most of the time nausea is accompanied by diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting, fever and/or severe fatigue. Many times, you wish you could just vomit and get it over with, but alas you are forced to endure minutes, hours and days of nausea.
This unpleasant sensation typically occurs as a result of an illness (i.e. cancer, lupus, irritable bowel syndrome, viruses, motion sickness, ulcers, heart attacks and infections), medications (i.e. chemotherapy drugs, steroids, etc.), food poisoning, pregnancy (i.e. increased pregnancy hormone – estrogen, progesterone and HCG) or excessive drinking (i.e. hangovers). There are alternative ways to get rid of nausea and get back to feeling like your “old self.”
For those who are interested in learning how to get rid of nausea without medicine, this article will help you with that. Hopefully, some of the ways will eliminate or at least reduce your nausea. It is important to note that if your nausea worsens or reoccurs, contact a medical professional immediately.
1. Fresh Air
A good way to get rid of nausea is to get some fresh air. Sometimes all you need to feel better is a good dose of oxygen, especially if you have been “cooped up” inside all day or you have been exposed to an overly warm or hot indoor environment. If you feel yourself becoming queasy take a walk outside and take a few breaths of the crisp, cool air. You can get rid of nausea – relief is waiting for you outside.
2. A Cold Glass of Water
Another effective way to reduce nausea and gain some relief is to drink a cold glass of water. Make sure the water is unsweetened and refrain from “gulping” the water. Sit down somewhere quiet and slowly sip the water until you feel your nausea ease up. The water will not only keep you hydrated, it will also replenish any fluids that you lose, should you start to vomit. You may be nauseated simply because you are hot and tired. The water will revitalize you.
3. Ginger
Ginger in any form can help getting rid of nausea. Flat ginger ale can for example help get rid of nausea during pregnancy. It can also help you get rid of hangover nausea. If you start to feel queasy, you will probably want to sip on a cold, flat ginger ale because it can calm your stomach. Ginger is known for its calming properties and has been used for centuries for gastrointestinal distress (i.e. diarrhea, vomiting and nausea), but there are also other health benefits of ginger. If you aren’t very fond of ginger ale, there are other ginger-based products (i.e. hard candy or ginger tea) that you may be able to tolerate better. Ginger ale and ginger products are especially beneficial if you are pregnant because many times pregnant women are limited on what medications that can safely take – this is an alternative to taking medicine.
4. Crackers
Crackers might help to ease the nausea. Bland foods like crackers can help you get rid of nausea. These high stark foods absorb stomach acid and can relief nausea caused by an upset stomach. Do not consume too many crackers because it can worsen your nausea and/or lead to vomiting. Rather, eat slowly, taking small bites. A small amount of bland foods like crackers will give you strength so you can fight whatever is making you ill.
5. Bananas
Bland foods like bananas can help you get rid of nausea. Truth-be-told, getting rid of nausea can be challenging, to say the least, but a snacking on bananas, if you can, while you are nauseated can give you some relief. Bananas contain high levels of vitamins and nutrients. They also consist of a smooth texture, which is easy on your stomach. Bananas contain properties that stimulate mucus production in your digestive tract and soothe heartburn-related and ulcer-based nausea.¹
6. Cold Compress
Is cold compress the best way to get rid of nausea? Well, maybe not the best way as it depends on what works best for you. You just have to try different things until you learn what eliminates or reduces nausea. However, a good way to alleviate nausea is to place a cold compress or cold rag on your head, neck or chest. Lay down until you feel better. The coldness will reduce your fever (if you have one) and provide you with cooling relief.
7. Herbal Tea
You can get rid of nausea with herbal teas like peppermint, chamomile and ginger tea as they work best for soothing a queasy stomach. Take a tea bag and place it in a cup of boiling water. Let the tea bag steep for approximately 5 minutes and remove the bag. Slightly sweetened the tea, if necessary, but be cautious with the honey or sugar. These sweeteners can actually make your nausea worse, if you consume too much of them. You may also want to try green tea because of its antioxidant properties. The properties will strengthen your immune system so you can fight off whatever is ailing you.
8. Deep breathing
Believe or not, just by taking a few deep breaths it can help you get rid of nausea. Just inhale slowly through your nose and exhale slowly through your month. Make sure to focus on your breathing
9. Acupressure
Acupressure is about putting physical pressure on different pressure points on your body. Stimulating the P6 acupressure point is the way to get rid of nausea. There are several studies that have found this technique very effective. Just massage the point with constant pressure for a few minutes and hopefully you can feel the nausea diminishing. You have probably seen the “Sea-Band”, which is a wristband that sets pressure on the P6 (Nei-Kuan) point. It is said to work well for those wanting to get rid of nausea during pregnancy.
10. Lemon
For those who love lemon, just the smell of citrus can make you feel better. However, sucking on pieces of sliced lemons could be very effective. You could of course try lemon juice or add lemon to your tea.
11. Ice
What about if you eat ice to get rid of the nausea? For some people eating ice can actually provide nausea relief. You can try flavored ice cubes or a handful of ice chips. You can let the ice melt in your mouth, but nothing wrong in chewing it.
