The USDA will later today announce their new graphical representation of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines For Americans. Will the new food icon be a success for the American people and will it be able to fight obesity?
The new food icon will be introduced today June 2, 2011 at 10:45 a.m. EDT. Speculations about the food icon suggest that it will be a plate model and probably go under the name MyPlate. According to domain registrations, done by the USDA, FoodPyramid.com can reveal that the USDA have registered the domain names ChooseMyPlate.gov and MyPlate.gov. The sites will probably go live after the announcment today.
The plate model will include the following categories: grain, fruit, protein, veggies and dairy products. It is supposed to be an easy-to-understand visual model to help consumers adopt healthy eating habits. The plate model, combined with the “circle model”, has been used successfully for many years in other countries such as Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Hopefully the plate model will be a success in the U.S. as well.
